How Do You Celebrate St. Valentine's Day?

Did you know that an estimated 1 billion Valentine's cards are sent to commemorate the holiday, this makes it the second most popular card sending holiday second to Christmas. Not surprisingly, 85% of the cards are sent by women.

I have been reading a lot this week about people who get depressed on Valentine's day because they do not have a significant other, someone they love, to celebrate with. When in fact love is all around them; their family, friends and more. I might add that most people are surrounded by love all of the time. So why should we celebrate that only one day a year?

I know that Valentine's day is supposed to be a romantic holiday filled with hearts, flowers, cupids and chocolate. But frankly I like to spend it celebrating love, all kinds of love not just "romantic" love. The love of good friends, family, my husband and even sending a few cards to people that I know who have lost their loved ones. After all, who doesn't want to be told they are loved and cherished?

I personally think Valentine's day should be about celebrating that. Life is so short and very precious. Why not spend this Valentine's day telling your husband, wife, kids, family, friends and more telling them how much they mean to you, how special they are and how much you love them.

Make them a special meal, bake them a little treat, and definitely give them a handwritten card or note.

On second thought, why wait for Valentine's day? Why not tell them today?

Have a great day!

  1. Well I hope Ruben and I can at least get out for a few hours; it's our 36th anniversary of the day we met! However you celebrate my dearest, enjoy it. LOVE IS ALL AROUND!

  2. I have to admit, I don't like it. When I was a kid, I was the one that wasn't getting any cards, so I think it tainted the holiday for me.

  3. I bet you are going to bake something incredible for VD! The Mister and I usually celebrate on another day because it is hard to get a res. This year we went to the play Love Letters. Hope you have a very sweet week!

  4. Of course 85% are sent by women! I always treat myself to a box of the best chocolates I have ever had from a local chocolatier who hand dips everything that morning....sooooo good! Then we always have dinner with our best friends but sadly his mom just passed away (funeral tomorrow) so we will not be keeping up our tradition this year. Hope whatever you are doing is fun!

  5. I agree with your sentiments here, Elizabeth. It's important to remember those around us who have suffered a loss or broken-heart. Loneliness is even more pronounced around holidays. Valentine's is another opportunity to do something thoughtful for others. My husband and I were planning to spend Valentine's day in Riviera Maya for my winter break this year. He hurt his back so we had to cancel our plans. My gift to him is kindness, love and patience as he deals with the pain right now. I'm hoping there will be a lovely meal and perhaps some bubbly in our weekend plans.
    Happy Valentine's Day to you!
    xx, Heather

  6. A lovely post Elizabeth. I completely agree with you. I love sending Valentine treats out to those I care about. I especially love this holiday as it gives me an excuse to bring out the glitter.... at school. You can never have enough glitter!! We actually have theater tickets this weekend. Enjoy your weekend.

  7. As always, I agree with your sentiments on Valentine's Day completely! Rather than spending it with my husband this year (we really don't celebrate it), I am spending the day with some of my favorite "girls" - my mom, my sister, my daughter and my niece...we are all meeting up at my mom's in Florida - from 26 to 88 and we all enjoy being with each other (and missing my big sister too). Enjoy your weekend AND your Valentine's Day, sweet Elizabeth!! xoxo
