The Little Things...Summer

Santa Fe, New Mexico

It is amazing to me how fast time seems to pass as I age. It seems like yesterday that I was relishing the end of a long, cold, wet winter and celebrating Spring with my sighting of the first daffodils. This summer has been hot, humid, rainy, cool, lazy and relaxing. We have been on adventures to New Mexico and the Eastern Shore as well as savoring beautiful days at home. After a long day of work, my husband and I meet on the front porch for an hour or two before dinner. Sometimes with a cocktail and a book and other times just sitting and enjoying a catch-up. Mornings and weekends have included long walks at the beach with the water lapping at our feet and the sand between our toes. We have hosted and enjoyed family and friends, sharing scrumptious dinners, and bbq's for just an evening with some guests and others for long weekends. I find myself up early in the summer so that I can enjoy the morning light and have the "world" to myself. I rarely see anyone else and sometimes as I walk I image what I would do with the neighborhood bed and breakfast, what I would serve, who I would host and the interesting place I would create. Other times, as I stand at the shore I take photos of the sun glistening on the water and take in the majesty of  the osprey flying overhead. I am slowing down this summer.  I stop and take the time to watch a dragonfly alight on a flower or the fireflies light up the evening sky. I savor the smell and the taste of peaches fresh from the market and as their juices run down my arm I am transported back to summer days spent with my grandparents who are long gone.
It is only July 10th and there is a fair bit of summer left but already the days are getting shorter and the sun is setting earlier, Fall is just around the corner. I have plans to enjoy every minute of what is left of summer 2019; the sunny days, the smell of the summer rain, my time with family and friends and all else that summer entails. What abut you? What have you been up to this summer and what plans do you have left for what remains?

Have a great day and remember to slow down and savor the little things.

  1. Our summer will last through October I imagine. Stays hot here quite a long time. I'm glad you're stopping to notice the little things and relaxing.
