I have not...Keep it nice and pretty...an escape.

I have not seen a civil discussion of current events on a design blog. Try as we might to remind ourselves to give equal weight to the polite exchanges, the angry ones always dominate and depress. Many commenters seem to relish the opportunity to misunderstand; to bring rancor.

There is almost no respite from the ugly events of every day. I do seek them out, and decorating blogs is one of the places I do that.

Now, having said all that, this is your blog and I totally respect that. I expect only kindness, thoughtfulness, and circumspection in any post you might make on sensitive topics. But if you went that way, and if I chose to read that post, I most likely would not read the comments. They just tend to make me feel bad.

Thank you, as always, for your sensitivity. Who knows? There may come a time for us when blogging, when thrifting, when pretty pictures, when self-expression become impossible or out of our reach. We are not there yet!

-Hallie. It is so hard to post a picture entitles "Pray for..." on Instagram and then follow it by a frivolous vacation photo. But at the same time, if we don't allow ourselves an escape from reality (which, let's face it, is what blogging is) then we may just spiral out of control. I find solace in others blogs whether it is travel, food, decorating or fashion and my hope is that someone will find the same in mine.

Sending you hugs, my dear friend - I think of you often and remember how YOU were are source of light during my own personal dark days last year - I am so blessed to have met you through our blogs! xoxoSandy at You May Be Wanderinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09108555245405638530noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010931580827952387.post-4286226137395789942016-07-20T13:12:35.114-04:002016-07-20T13:12:35.114-04:00Oh, how I know what you're saying. As you kno...Oh, how I know what you're saying. As you know I have spouted out on my blog, however, the people who disagree with me won't allow anything like an "opinion" to matter. You and I both know how we feel. And, I do believe the 24/7 news cycles keeps everything ALIVE & in our faces far too long, as they must do. Life in this world is very very difficult these days. I don't know the answer, however, I do know it is time for a change in DC. Changing everything cannot hurt. In the mean time, all I can actually do is vote. My blog used to be a refuge for me, and reading other blogger's posts was a beautiful experience. Now, I want to read "content" of some substance, not just pretty pictures. Your recipes and your posts represent YOU, keep on doing what you do so well. We love you !!!Splenderosahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06421992667097947469noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010931580827952387.post-10010193910890743002016-07-20T11:27:25.562-04:002016-07-20T11:27:25.562-04:00i honor your questions and longings in this post. ...i honor your questions and longings in this post. thank you for spearheading a discussion. i am quite guilty of distracting myself with pretty fluff too much of the time in the midst of worldly turmoil. i do want to offer my blog as a corner of tranquil relief on the web because we all long for rest and peace. and here is something else i often do: i blog with love and prayer...all the white space between my chicken scratches and visual images in a post can also breathe peace and mercy into hearts open to find it. we have to be very intentional about not growing cynical or defeatist when the times look dark. and we have to be awake so as not to become manipulated by media. and we have to remember as figures ourselves in media, that our words and the spirit breathed into them have capacity to uplift and transcend the violence and hate swirling in other places. you are absolutely right: love always wins.michelehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04147970920141315262noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010931580827952387.post-32210926958273280712016-07-20T10:53:40.301-04:002016-07-20T10:53:40.301-04:00There are times when it's best to step away fr...There are times when it's best to step away from the news for awhile... though I do wonder if the news itself is part of the problem, being on 24 hours a day, having to ramp up stories.William Kendallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00331324250821836822noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010931580827952387.post-50982696069908294642016-07-20T07:36:10.914-04:002016-07-20T07:36:10.914-04:00Agree with it all and have grappled with the same ...Agree with it all and have grappled with the same thoughts myself. How do you put out a post about flowers and entertaining when 80 people were just mauled down. Seems heartless and insensitive.

But..... to answer your question my blog world IS my escape from the reality of the world. I hear from people so often who thank me for a little refuge from the "every day" and say its a gift. Just as I consider it a gift to read many of my favorite blogs, it takes me away to pretty places and is often just the escape I need.

If we all stopped doing what we love or what we enjoy, our world would be a bleak place. To stop that is giving power to the hate filed demons wreaking havoc. That is not something I will allow them ever to take away from me.

I am very aware of what is going on being a former new junkie but knowing I am almost powerless against it, I carry on. I believe and will always believe that in the end, love, compassion and tolerance will win.The enchanted homehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18016560832999165943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010931580827952387.post-38278317171509908512016-07-20T06:09:11.765-04:002016-07-20T06:09:11.765-04:00Oh my friend, I could really write a long comment ...Oh my friend, I could really write a long comment on here about all this. I try to keep sensitive material private. But like you, I too am finding it difficult to share happy, unrelated topics on social media these days because the REALITY of the world is rather grim and I often wonder if our attention should be on living our lives away from social media for a while. But on the other hand I wonder if we should just "carry on." We are getting disgusted with watching the news but we want to keep updated on what is happening around us. The the political scene is another circus that is literally making me sick to my stomach.

Yet in the midst of all of this, I do know what we must do: love one another, love our enemies, and change what we can, especially by the latter.

PEACE.Castles Crowns and Cottageshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01780241008313365707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010931580827952387.post-15775624943823339292016-07-20T04:21:18.159-04:002016-07-20T04:21:18.159-04:00Very interesting, it's a crazy sad world at th...Very interesting, it's a crazy sad world at the moment and a rather frightening one. I find we must be positive and I also strongly believe we must teach love and tolerance at home, every small act of kindness helps. In the '80s, the '90s (not just the '60s). We can focus on what's beautiful in the world. We can work to change what's wrong, starting by being civil and caring and acknowledging the humanity of others.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010931580827952387.post-75711894413305950452016-07-20T01:02:10.809-04:002016-07-20T01:02:10.809-04:00Thoughtful post

I believe it is important to maintain some separation, much as we do in conversation face to face.
When the prayers for the moment are done, and the tears take a break, then reading a blog about travel or making a wonderful summer cake can feel like a friend at the door with a gift of comfort.Salty Pumpkin Studiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10116105220109225010noreply@blogger.com
